Part II: Building Trusted Relationships

In our last report we talked about forced marketing and that it
just does not work.
One major problem with too many marketers is that they fall in
love with their product or service and try to force others to see it
in the same view. Count on it, it will not happen. It especially
will
not happen if you try to talk someone into joining you with a
sales pitch.
You've heard the story, sell benefits not features. If you have a
good name on the Internet and are recognized as a caring
marketer who only recommends products or service you use -
that are easy enough for a new marketer to join and test, and you
are willing to give them the support they need to build right
along with you, then it is possible promoting the benefits of a
great program will work with your list.
Even then, it is not as easy as it sounds. No matter who you are,
or how long you have been marketing on the Internet, it is the
trust and credibility factor that will decide who will join you.
There is one more important factor here to consider as well. If
you have tested every theory, and everything you try falls to dust,
if no one finds your opportunity worth testing for themselves,
then get the message, your market is too narrow or non-existent.
Drop the product or service and look for a new one.
You need to learn how to develop the ability to test products that
a little research will tell you has a possible market and drop them
just as fast if they do not work out.
Relationship marketing works.
While all the research and testing you will be learning to do is
undergoing the learning phase, you will consistently need to be
adding people to your contact management list. If you do not,
then all your marketing strategies will be for nothing. No list
equals no sales.
Begin your learning phase of relationship marketing by looking at
the effect you have on the people in your circle of influence. Do
you instil trust in people easily? How long is your list of friends?
Now I do not mean to be cruel here or suggest that if your list of
friends is not long you are not a good relationship builder.
Many a successful marketer is a loner basically. But you can
watch them walk into a room and heads turn to see who they are.
They have a presence about them that demands your attention.
They walk tall and proud and their air is one of confidence and
you just have to learn what they know that can help you.
Their confidence allows them the luxury of making you the center
of attention. They open up with you and you feel yourself
blooming into a character you did not know existed but you do
know you feel so good for having said a simple hello.
That's your exercise in self development this week. When you are
out and among friends or complete strangers stretch who you are
and make someone feel happy to know you. Pay attention to you
and your actions. And most definitely pay attention to how you
are received.

You know, computers can be totally frustrating to the best
It brain. But it isn't the tech side tho that grabs you as much as it is
little things - like mail.
I don't live in my mail accounts, learning long ago to look for the
important mail and leave the rest till another day.
Well 'another day' popped by for an unwelcome visit when I had to
do the uninstall/reinstall security. I chose to update the security so
that meant the whole gambit of security familiarization had to take
place.
The first thing it wants to do is run anti-virus and ant-spyware and you
can hardly quibble at that demand since that
is why you have the darned security in the first place.
Four hours later, I was very aware of just how many files my two hard
drives had accumulated. I also learned just how easy it is to become
totally impatient with computers.
Mind you a 24-hour run of pretty dangerous t-storms had cost me one day,
then testing the sudden issues to find it was my security, didn't help
matters thereby costing me another day.
Day three is the primer for one heck of an impatient explosion, as the
junk filters now have to do their job on the thousands of mails I just
did not have time for.
As a Marketing Consultant and trainer, I know that time can be a friend
or it can be an enemy disguised as a time waster of must do actions.
Time is money! It either makes it or it is responsible for costing big
dollars. The lesson? I need to be better organized with how I deal with
my mail for starters.
The price for leaving the mail for another day? I owe ME THREE DAYS of
lost income.

There is regular, organic search engine optimization,
where you
try to improve your rankings in regular search results. Then there
is pay-per-click search engine marketing, where you buy your
way to click throughs and a good rate of return.
All search engines now sell
pay-per-click text
(PPC) ads,
presenting ads that are relevant to the search query topic side by
side by regular search results.
Now having said that, let's get a few misconceptions out of the
way.
For every
user of SEO, there will be an equal number who
consider it a waste of their time. It IS labour intensive and it IS
a
form of marketing tool that leverages your work whether a web
site page, a Blog entry or a product recommendation you wish to
promote to a wider market than you may currently be getting
using other forms of advertising and promotion.
What most naysayers do not realize is that with such a
humungous number of users who use search engines to find what
they are looking for, the concept of reverse funnelling and lead
generation can be vastly improved upon if they had a clue as to
how to use search engines for their work.
Learning search engine optimization beats the heck out of FFA,
safelists and classified promotions. Assuredly, they can and
should be used where the need fits.
Pay-per-click and buying leads both cost dollars the majority of
new marketers cannot afford. Both of these methods require an
expertise that most marketers have to spend a lot of time
learning how to work properly or it can turn out to be very costly.
Learning how to do on page optimization, write content that is
normal and feeds the ranking algorithms is hardly a waste of
time. Once that portion is out of the way, then using any
directory to get your work out there, you and your business
branded in the eyes of hundreds of thousands of hungry eyeballs
creates its own viral traffic, far more targeted than just buying
leads or using the other methods mentioned
above.
Linking strategies have always been a bone of contention with far
more than search engines. Link farms are of little value to
anyone unless they ARE using your content to build a business
and do not have the expertise you do in order to train their
people.
What is hard for the naysayer to grasp is that most search
engines have guidelines that their work would not fit. The idea
that they should give you an honest opinion about a product or
service does not enter into their customer relationships of trust
and integrity. They work off numbers. And with the net the size
it is, they feel free to promote in any manner that makes then the
profit they seek.
the last thing they have on their minds is that you count other
than pulling out your wallet when they ask you to do so.
At its basest form, a search engine is a repository for any and all
information available on the Internet. Sort of like an oversized
library.

While I sat in the reception area of my
doctor's office, a woman rolled an elderly man in a wheelchair
into the room. As she went to the receptionist's desk, the man
sat there, alone and silent. Just as I was thinking I should
make small talk with him, a little boy slipped off his mother's
lap and walked over to the wheelchair. Placing his hand on the
man's, he said, 'I know how you feel. My mom makes me ride in
the stroller too.'.
As I was nursing my baby, my cousin's six-year-old daughter,
Krissy, came into the room. Never having seen anyone breast feed
before, she was intrigued and full of all kinds of questions
about what I was doing. After mulling over my answers, she
remarked, 'My mom has some of those, but I don't think she knows
how to use them.'
Out bicycling one day with my eight-year-old granddaughter,
Carolyn, I got a little wistful. 'In ten years,' I said, 'you'll
want to be with your friends and you won't go walking, biking,
and swimming with me like you do now. Carolyn shrugged. 'In ten
years you'll be too old to do all those things anyway.'
Working as a paediatric nurse, I had the difficult assignment of
giving immunization shots to children. One day I entered the
examining room to give four-year-old Lizzie her needle. 'No, no,
no!' she screamed. 'Lizzie,' scolded her mother, 'that's not
polite behaviour.' With that, the girl yelled even louder, 'No,
thank you! No, thank you!
On the way back from a Cub Scout meeting, my grandson asked my
son the question. 'Dad, I know that babies come from mommies'
tummies, but how do they get there in the first place?' he asked
innocently. After my son hemmed and hawed awhile, my grandson
finally spoke up in disgust. 'You don't have to make something
up, Dad. It's OK if you don't know the answer.'
Just before I was deployed to Iraq , I sat my eight-year-old son
down and broke the news to him. 'I'm going to be away for a long
time,' I told him. 'I'm going to Iraq .' 'Why?' he asked. 'Don't
you know there's a war going on over there?'

stricken with cancer, AIDS and blood diseases. One afternoon he
and his wife, Joanne Woodward, stopped by to have lunch with the
kids. A counsellor at a nearby table, suspecting the young
